Food Security in Kenya

Introduction

The Arid Lands Resource Management Project (ALRMP II) development objective is to reduce livelihood vulnerability, enhance food security and improve access to basic services in 28 drought-prone arid and semi-arid districts in Kenya.

Towards the achievement of the Project objective, the Natural Resource Management (NRM) component aims to establish and strengthen initiatives to reduce the vulnerability of pastoral and agro-pastoral communities to the effects of drought, and enhance rural livelihoods through sustainable use and management of natural resources.

The project, through NRM and other components, endeavors to empower the poor inhabiting such areas to adjust and adapt their livelihood strategies (including investing in natural resources) to ensure subsistence in a risky environment.

The activities deal with the establishment of an enabling environment at national, district and local levels to enable key actors (communities and service providers) to implement a set of integrated NRM activities in response to current conditions, constraints and opportunities.

The component also promotes a better understanding of the natural resource base, leading to better planning and implementation of a coordinated set of activities.

The activities implemented within NRM are identified by line ministries, Community Action Plans (CAPs) /proposals, institutions and District Specific Vision and Strategy (NRM 2005- 2015) plan, and screened by technical sub-committees and finally approved by DSG.

NRM promotes a better understanding of the natural resource base, leading to better planning and implementation of a coordinated set of activities.

This is aimed at helping key institutions, at the district and community levels, to develop capacity to plan and implement activities within defined areas (Discrete Development Areas) and elsewhere, in liaison with other ALRMP II components.

Natural resources are the foundation for livelihood options in the districts and their sustainable use and management will obviously enhance food security.
